A Little History Lesson

Our founder, Roy Smith, became a follower of Jesus Christ in the 1940s. After attending a Christian College in Pasadena, CA, Roy married his present wife, Dorothy and they felt the call to pursue missions service. Like so many of us though, the busyness of life and children took hold and they instead poured themselves into youth and music ministry in the local church arena. Roy served in various church leadership functions for many years and in 1970, he and Dorothy began serving at Los Gatos Christian Church, CA. For 10 of those 20 years Roy served as Missions Committee Chairman and saw Faith Promise giving to missions grow to over $1,000,000 a year along with over 100 young people committing themselves to full time service.

This apparent hand of God’s blessing drew churches to ask Roy for help with their missions programs. In 1980, he joined Partners International in their Church Relations Department. An organization that began for the sole purpose of assisting local churches in Missions involvement, ACMC (originally Association of Church Missions Committees) invited Roy to become their first Regional Director for the Northern CA region with the blessing of Partners International.

Dorothy has always been a woman of faith, prayer, and encouragement of others. Roy and Dorothy were a dynamic team, sold out for the gospel especially among least reached peoples.

Roy served in this capacity from 1982-1990. Roy and Dorothy moved to Portland, OR, to become the Northwest ACMC Regional Director from 1990-1994. The churches of Singapore heard of Roy’s expertise and passion for raising up missionaries from the local church and Roy and Dorothy spent two years training, challenging, and mobilizing Singaporean churches to the Great Commission.

In 2002, Roy and Dorothy, now in their 70s, continued their zeal for the lost and Roy began Global Sharing with the mission to disciple the least reached peoples into living churches by working alongside nationals. His message to these leaders was “Its Your Turn.” His greatest passion was encouraging these leaders in practical ways with materials, tools, and visits of encouragement. And since 2002, Global Sharing has supported church planters in Malawi, Africa, North India, Romania, Indonesia, and various works in the Philippines, China, and Thailand.

With Roy’s declining health, Global Sharing brought on Danny Martin in 2010 (founder of Mission to Unreached Peoples). Danny brought church planting efforts to Thailand, Philippines, and China through bi-vocational ministries into the Global Sharing portfolio.

Since its inception in 2002, Ron Smith, Roy’s son has chaired the Board. December 1, 2015, Ron stepped into the role of President, continuing to work alongside Danny Martin now as COO and developing his expertise especially to Asian bi-vocational church planting. After 20 years at his church overseeing Missions and Outreach among other responsibilities, Ron brings continuity, proven experience, and passion that will propel Global Sharing forward in the coming future.

In November 2012, Roy Smith passed into the next life. Dorothy continues to be an amazing prayer warrior, taking on the Global Sharing Prayer Coordinator position.

Ron and his wife, Dorie, have three children, all active in ministry: one in Spain, one headed to France, and the other in California. Four grandsons also bring great joy to their lives!
