A Story From Mexico: Widows & Orphans

You can tell a lot about a church by what its members do throughout the week. Do they all go their separate ways, consumed by the world’s values and comforts? Not so in San Vicente, Mexico. First Baptist Church is actually seeking to do what the Bible says, to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength, and to love others as yourself.” What results is beautiful! How so?

When a Global Sharing Team came to First Baptist of San Vicente this January, 2019, we spent several afternoons at the home of a widow named Rumualda. While we were there, I watched our GS Team join eight First Baptist San Vicente church members to dig post holes, build a clothes line, clean out a deteriorated washing room area, and begin a wood storage shed…all at Rumualda’s home…all practical demonstrations of love! With happy banter freely flowing, these folks exemplify the kind of people God is looking for to be His channels of love. It’s what James calls pure and undefiled religion. It’s contagious. And it’s Kingdom building. It is what results when lives are built around our Savior and not ourselves.

By the way, this widow has a daughter, Tina. The drunk driving accident that took Rumualda’s husband left Tina without a father when she was quite young. But Global Sharing’s late ministry partner, Dan Vallotton, poured into her over the years, caring for her and her family in the absence of her father. And David Cuevas, pastor of First Baptist San Vicente and current GS ministry partner, grew up watching this love in action. So today, all these years later, not only are Pastor David’s people continuing to pour out love and care for Rumualda, but Tina, after going to Morocco as a missionary, has been serving in Oaxaca, Mexico, for a number of years. And it all began with a love for God channeled into a loving service of widows and orphans!
